First report on the sector in Catalonia
Presentation of the 2009 Biocat Report generated high expectations. CEO of Biocat, Montserrat Vendrell, presented the report to professionals from the sector. The report gives a complete analysis of the biotechnology, biomedical and medical technology sector in Catalonia and is an essential tool for policy-makers in our country. The report is based on information collected in the Biocat Directory-which surveyed 358 companies and nearly 400 research centers and groups, in addition to hospitals, universities, science parks and facilities, and technology platforms- from nearly 150 questionnaires carried out in 2009, which were then cross referenced and extrapolated using a number of nation-wide sector reports.
In the closing presentation, Josep-Lluís Carod-Rovira stressed the Catalan Government’s efforts to make the biotech sector a new production model. To this end, he pointed out the 6,722 million euros earmarked for funding the Strategic Agreement for the Internationalization, Employment and Competitiveness of the Catalan Economy in 2010 and fiscal benefits for business angels. According to the vice president of the Government, this last measure is “particularly important” for the biotech sector, as it is difficult for many innovative companies to find venture capital. Furthermore, he reminded participants that the Government is not only dedicating resources to the sector, they are also committed to internationalization tasks, “understanding that one of the most important challenges facing Catalan biotech companies is moving into markets in the United States and Asia.”
